THE GOBLIN AND THE KETTLE-II
Story 4
When the girl lifted the kettle on to the fire, Nix began to dance about as before. But the kettle had a lid and he did not manage to spill any water this time.
After a while, Nix stopped laughing. ‘It is warm in here,’ he said to himself ‘Indeed it is a little too warm.’
Of course, the bottom of the kettle soon grew very hot and burnt Nix. He had to jump up and down in the water to keep himself cool.
When the water became as hot as the bottom of the kettle, Nix screamed out in terror, ‘Help, help! Let me out!’
‘It is strange how the kettle sings to-night,’ said the woman.
By this time the water began to boil, and the jumping of Nix inside the kettle made the lid jump up and down. The little chap puffed and blew till his breath came out of the spout in clouds of steam.
The woman lifted the kettle from the fire and set it on the floor. At once the lid flew off, and out jumped a little man with green teeth and a tall green hat.
“Why, it is a water-goblin! cried the woman in surprise. ‘He has brought us all the bad luck to-day.’
Out of the cottage door and through the village Nix ran.
He did not stop until he has plunged out of sight into the cool waters of his lake.
Never again did Nix try to annoy the people who live on Dry Land.
