A BRAVE DAUGHTER-II

  Story 5

At last Sir Patrick left his hiding-place. For a short time, he hid under the floor-boards of a room in his own house, then he escaped to London, dressed so that no one might know who he was.

Next he took refuge in the country of Holland; and after a little while his wife and children joined him there. Sometime later, Grizel went back to their old home to fetch little sister Julian, who had been left there because she was ill.

The sisters landed safely at a port in Holland, but as they found no one there to meet them, they had to go a long journey on foot to the city of Rotterdam. Little Julian, who was still weak, and had lost both her shoes in the mud of the harbour, could go no further without help.

'Never mind, Julian, said Grizel. 'See, I will take you on my back, and we will soon be there.' So, for most of the way to Rotterdam, Julian rode on Grizel's back and thus the two reached the city. Another traveler helped them by carrying their luggage.
The family lived quietly but safely in one of the cities of Holland. They were poor now, for many of Sir Patrick's lands and most of his money had been taken from him.

In these hard times Grizel was the family's greatest help. Sir Patrick was not rich enough now to keep servants, and Lady Hume was in poor health so Grizel cheerfully washed, cooked and sewed for them all.

After some years, when the king from whom Sir Patrick had fled had been driven from the country, Grizel's family, was able to return home. Sir Patrick was made an earl and became a rich man again.

Grizel's life was happy. Yet, when she became an old woman, she used to say that the days spent with her own folk in a strange land, when they were all poor and needed her help and courage, were the happiest days of her life.
