The Tha Kha floating market
Groupwork
G. Discuss in groups the following question and write the answer. Do we have anything like a Tha Kha market in our country? If we have, where can you find it? If we don't have, discuss why we need it.
The Guava Market of Bangladesh
Bangladesh also has a floating market like Thailand’s Tha Kha market. This floating market appears in the Barisal division, especially in Jhalakathi Sadar Upazila and at Swarupkathi and Banaripara Upazila in Pirozpur. The main product of trade in this floating market is Guava. The southern region of our country is very suitable to farm guavas. During the monsoon season, guavas grow in plenty. However, boats are mainly used to transport these guavas for selling and buying. Hence, this trading occurs on the rivers of Barisal and so this is called the floating guava market. Though we have a floating market, we should improvise the idea of floating market and other products should be included for trade in this floating market. Indeed, Bangladesh is a riverine country and water-ways are very significant in our trade and economy. Hence, floating markets in our rivers can play a great role in our economic growth.
