Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Activities
A. Ask and answer these questions.
1. Do you enjoy natural beauty like flowers, trees, woods, hills, etc.?
Answer Yes, I do.
2. Have you ever been to a place where you enjoyed such beauty? If yes, briefly describe it.
Answer Yes, I’ve been to Rangamati, Khagrachari and Bandarban. There are beautiful trees and hills in these places.
C. Answer the following questions.
1. Where do you think the poet is going? Why is he going there?
Answer The poem has both external and internal meaning. Externally, the poet was going to a particular destination. He was going there to keep a promise. Internally, the poet was going to fulfil his responsibilities and duties in daily life.
2. Why did the poet stop by the woods though it was dark and he was alone?
Answer Externally, the poet knew the owner of the wood and also knew that he lived in the nearby village. So he did not feel any danger to stop there. But internally, stopping by the woods means the desire to stop in the midst of our busy life to enjoy a moment of beauty.
3. Guess what promise the poet had to keep before he would sleep.
Answer Here promise means various types of promises in life like ‘’I’ll be home for dinner, mom,’’ “Let’s get married,” “I’ll take care of you” and so on.
4. Write an imaginary dialogue between the poet and his horse.
Answer Horse: Where are we stopping here, Master?
Speaker : Stop, let me enjoy the beauty of nature.
Horse : But there is no farmhouse here, where is my dinner?
Speaker : Oh! Don’t make a noise please.
Horse : Hey, is there any mistake? It’s very cold here.
Speaker : Okay then, let’s go.
5. Do you find any similarities between the themes of the poems, “Time you old gypsy man” and “Stopping by woods on a snowy evening”?
Answer In both the poems, time is one of the major themes. The first poem refers to the restless motion of time that does not wait for anything or anybody. Similarly, in the second poem, the speaker wants to rest a little but then remembers that he/she does not have time to do so as he/she has a lot of responsibilities to fulfill.
