Putting our fish in hot water!
Pair Work
A. Spend one minute thinking about your life as a fish. In pairs, talk to another “fish" about your life as a fish.
F1: Hi! How are you?
F2: I am fine. How about you?
F1: I am fine, too. Did you find any food?
F2: No, all the plants in this area are dying.
F1: How about the shrimps? They are delicious.
F2: As there are no plants, the number of shrimps are also decreasing. How will we survive now?
F1: I don’t know. Something must be happening to our water.
F2: I think it is the detergent used by the humans to wash their cloth. It is killing the plants and shrimps.
F1: Even I find it difficult to breath in this water.
F2: I hope the humans know what they are doing.
F1: Me too. Otherwise, there will not be any of us left.
F2: Let’s just hope they understand.
B. Do you agree with the following statements on fish and fishing? Discuss with your partner(s).
a. Fish will never disappear. There will always be enough fish to feed the world.
b. In many ways, people are like fish.
c. The hobby of fishing should be banned to help protect fish population.
d. Some fishes might be kept as pets as long as their requirements are met.
Clues:
-
a. Number of fishes are declining due to climate change. Some fishes cannot tolerate change in water temperature. As a result, some species are moving towards extinction. Additionally, increase in the human population will lead to more demand for fishes as the source of protein. So, there will not be enough fish to feed the world.
-
b. We are in some ways more like fish. We also face threat of extinction due to global warming. Our environment is also getting destroyed. A part of population is suffering from malnutrition. However, we are in most of the cases responsible for our own distress.
-
c. Banning the hobby of fishing cannot be the only solution. Hobby often sometimes help the conservation of some fish species and creates awareness conservation. The focus should be more on commercial fishing and excessive fishing of a certain species.
-
d. No, I do not agree. Fish are meant to be living at liberty in the natural or man-made water sources. They should be left free.
