Answer
Rosamond
Rosamond is a seven-year-old girl. She often goes to market with her mother. She is very emotional. One day, while walking with her mother in the market, she saw some beautiful roses. A liking for them grew in her mind. She told her mother that they were artificial. So they are of no use to her. Then Rosamond saw some pretty ornaments and requested her mother to buy them. But her mother told her that she did not have enough money. Rosamond became disappointed. Finally, she saw some colourful jars and tried to persuade her mother to buy a purple jar. Suddenly she stumbled on a stone. She began to limp and told her mother that the condition of her shoes was worse now. They were worn out. She was badly in need of buying a pair of new shoes. But her mother told her that she had very little money to buy only one thing. She told Rosamond to decide between the purple jar and shoe. Rosamond chose the purple jar. Her mother told her to examine it before buying but she did not care. After coming back home, Rosamond found an unpleasant smell from the jar. She poured the water of the jar and found that it was no longer colourful. Rosamond got a lesson for her stupidity and her sufferings with her old shes knew no bounds.
Rosamond’s Mother
Rosamond’s mother is a mature woman. She is very practical and frugal. That’s why, when Rosamond tried to buy different things in the market, she tried to stop her by mentioning her shortage of money or uselessness of those things. She is clever because she told Rosamond to examine the purple jar before buying it. However, we find her lack of sympathy when she did not give any consolation to Rosamond after discovering the fake beauty of the so called purple jar.
4. How does Rosamond learn her lesson?
Answer When she brought the purple jar, she threw the water out to make the jar empty for the flowers. But she found that it was the purple water that made the jar look purple. She realized her fault. She also realized that she should have bought the shoes instead of the jar. The rest of the month she could not jump, play or go out with her mother for the poor condition of her old shoes. Thus she learned a good lesson of life.
