Environmental pollution
Groupwork
D. In groups of four, prepare a summary in 100 words of the topic below. First, work together to prepare a draft. When the draft is complete, select a group member to read it to the class.
Topic: Polluting the land means polluting the water
Polluting the land means polluting the water
There is a huge connection between lands and waterbodies. They are connected through cycles like water cycle, nitrogen cycle etc. Pollution of land might seem separate from water pollution. In reality, they are not. Fertilizers and pesticides used in the field get washed by rain and ultimately goes back to water sources. These things also reach the underground water storage dripping through layers of soil. Industrial wastes also find their way to the water in this process. Garbage that we produce everyday ultimately blocks our rivers, lakes and canals. We should be aware of the notion that land pollution means polluting the water as well.
E. Look at the three posters below. What messages do they give? Which one do you like the most? Tell your friend why you like it.
These three posters help us see pollution from the perspective of animals that suffer from it. It reminds us that we are not the only living being in this planet and millions of other animals call it home too. We should be respectful to others and make this planet a liveable place.
I like the third poster most. It shows a fish swimming around the waste material thrown in the water bodies by humans. The water is the home for the fish but we humans are filling it with the waste of our own. Fishes cannot speak. But here, we can see what the fishes would have told if they had a voice of their own. This poster really opens our eyes to the severity of the pollution problem.
