At a railway station
Introduction
A. Look at the following picture. Can you guess what place it is? Describe the things you see and what people are doing there.
A1. Now read the passage below:
Yesterday I went to the railway station with my elder brother to buy tickets inadvance as we are going to Chittagong tomorrow. The place was very much crowded, and there was a long queue in front of the ticket counter. My brother asked me to find a place to sit down while he waited in the queue for his turn. So, I went to the nearest tea-stall. A train came and halted at the platform. People rushed to get on it and started struggling with the passengers who wanted to get down from it. Some of them were looking for coolies while some others were carrying their own luggage. There was a peanut and chocolate vendor roaming around to sell his stuff. A young boy was trying to convince his mother to buy him comic books from the bookshop at the station. A woman was walking up and down the platform to pacify her crying baby. A middle-aged man was reading newspaper sitting at the corner of the tea-shop. I was having a cup of tea and observing these silently. After a while, I came back to the counter to check if my brother had got the tickets. Fortunately, he got them quicker than I expected. We came out of the station as soon as possible to get rid of the crowd
আগামীকাল চট্টগ্রাম যাবো বলে, গতকাল বড় ভাইয়ের সাথে রেলষ্টেশনে গিয়েছিলাম অগ্রিম টিকেট কাটতে। সেখানে প্রচন্ড ভীড় ছিল, আর টিকেট কাউন্টারের সামনে লম্বা লাইন ছিল । আমার বড় ভাই আমাকে একটা বসার জায়গা খুঁজে নিতে বলল যতক্ষন সে লাইনে দাঁড়িয়ে তার পালা আসার অপেক্ষা করে। তাই আমি কাছেই একটা চা-এর দোকানে গেলাম। একটা ট্রেন স্টেশনে এসে থামল। লোকজন তাড়াহুড়া করে ট্রেনে ওঠার জন্য ট্রেন থেকে নেমে আসা যাত্রীদের সাথে যেন লড়াই করতে লাগল। কিছু যাত্রী কুলি খুঁজতে লাগল, আর কেউ কেউ নিজেই মাল-পত্র বহন করলো। একজন ফেরীওয়ালা বাদাম আর চকোলেট বিক্রি করছিল। একটা ছোট ছেলে স্টেশনে বইয়ের দোকান থেকে কমিকস বই কিনে দেওয়ার জন্য তার মায়ের কাছে বায়না করছিল। একজন মহিলা তার কানড়বারত বাচ্চাকে শান্ত করার জন্য স্টেশনের এ-মাথা থেকে ও-মাথা হাঁটাহাঁটি করছিল। একজন মধ্যবয়সী লোক চায়ের দোকানের কোনায় বসে খবরের কাগজ পড়ছিল। আমি চা খেতে খেতে এসব দেখছিলাম। কিছুক্ষন পর, আমি কাউন্টারে ফিরে গেলাম আমার বড় ভাই টিকেট পেয়েছে কিনা তা দেখার জন্য। ভাগ্যক্রমে সে তাড়াতাড়ি টিকেট পেয়ে গেল। ভিড়ের হাত থেকে বাঁচার জন্য আমরা যত দ্রুত সম্ভব স্টেশন থেকে বেরিয়ে এলাম।
Note: While talking about that happened in the past, we usually use past simple and past continuous tenses. In a past simple sentence, the main verb is used in its past form.
Example: I went (past form of the verb ‘go’) to the railway station yesterday. In a past continuous sentence, we use an auxiliary verb- either was or were- and ‘-ing’ at the end of the main verb. For example: A baby was crying (cry+ing).
